Prince Harry - Diana Was 'Best Mother In The World'

Prince Harry has led the tributes to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, at a service to mark the tenth anniversary of her death, describing her as "simply the best mother in the world".

Speaking at the service at Guards' Chapel in Kensington, near Buckingham Palace, Prince Harry said: "She made us and so many other people happy. May this be the way she is remembered."

Prince William also gave a reading at the service, as did Diana's sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale.

The congregation included Sir Elton John, Lord Attenborough, celebrity photograph Mario Testino, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former PMs Tony Blair and John Major.

Prince Charles and the Queen also attended the event, although the Duchess of Cornwall did not attend. She had released a statement earlier this week saying that her attendance could divert attention from the purpose of the occasion.

Other events are being organised across the UK to mark the anniversary. Earlier on Friday, a two-minute silence was held at Harrods in Knightsbridge in honour of the Princess and Dodi Fayed, who died in the same car crash in Paris. Harrods owner and Dodi's father, Mohamed Al Fayed reportedly laid flowers at a shrine at the store.

A service will be held at Manchester Cathedral on Friday afternoon, while a choral evensong will take place at Bristol cathedral and prayers will be said at Llandaff cathedral in Cardiff.

Princess Diana died in a car crash in the Pont del'Alma tunnel in Paris after being pursued by paparazzi. Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul were also killed in the same crash.
