Police Probe After Man Shot Dead In East London

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man in his 20s was shot dead in south east London.

The victim was found unconscious with head injuries and wounds to his body in Penrose Street, Walworth, at around 2.50am on Friday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a post mortem is due to be carried out later today.

It is not clear whether the man had been shot in the head.

The crime scene, near the junction with Walworth Road, has been cordoned off.

The death is being investigated by the specialist shooting team Operation Trident which investigates gun crime in London's black community.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Boughton said officers are keeping an "open mind as to the motive".

"This area is near a very busy part of south east London. A large number of bus routes use Walworth Road and it contains many fast food outlets," he said.

It is understood that police know the identity of the man but have been unable to reach his next of kin.

Police are appealing for anyone with any information or who seen anything suspicious to come forward.

Two weeks ago, Ryan Bravo was gunned down from outside a Costcutter store on Camberwell road.
