Police And Army Come To Aid Of Motorists Trapped In Snow

Emergency crews have rescued around 200 people after they became stranded in heavy snow in Devon, as wintry weather conditions continue to blight the UK.

Police, soldiers and civilian volunteers came to the aid of those stranded and brought them to a series of shelters after 1ft of snow fell.

Devon and Cornwall Police used a fleet of 4x4s to try to reach the passengers on the A38 and A380 near Haldon Hill, with the civilian Dartmoor Rescue Group also helping.

Some were forced to abandon their vehicles as temperatures dropped significantly, while others had to spend the night in their cars.

Rescuers were called to the A38 at Haldon Hill, near Exeter, at around 9pm after weather deteriorated suddenly.

Alan Mobbs from Devon and Cornwall Police said a small number of drivers remained stuck in their cars on the A38.

Members of Dartmoor Rescue Group have been providing those people with blankets and hot drinks.

Mr Mobbs said: "The drivers are all a bit fed up that they have been there so long. But that is because they have been the most difficult to get to."

Snow has particularly affected the West Country, Midlands and some southern counties.

Rail passengers also face disruption in several areas including Wales, the South West, the Midlands and Yorkshire.
