Man Found Guilty Of Army Veteran Murder

A 21-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder an Army veteran during a botched robbery.

Harry Lindley, 89, was discovered in a pool of blood at his bungalow in Wallsend in April last year.

He had been stamped on, punched, kicked and beaten, suffering injuries to 15 parts of his body, including severe bruising to both sides of his skull and damage to his larynx.

Michael Stevenson, 21, of Westbury Avenue, Walker, denied his murder.

However, a jury of seven men and five women at Newcastle Crown Court took 72 minutes to find Stevenson unanimously guilty of murder.

The court heard how Stevenson, who was under the influence of alcohol and crack cocaine, had fled the victim's house, leaving the 89-year-old conscious, but badly beaten.

He had conned his way into Mr Lindley's home.

Stevenson used the victim's telephone to call his drug dealer and a taxi to take him away from the house.

Stevenson is expected to be sentenced this afternoon.

Prosecutor Simon Bourne-Arton QC told trial judge Walker that the offence was so serious the Crown was asking him to consider a sentencing with a starting point of 30 years.
