Double Fatalities After Motorway Crash

Two people are dead following a rush-hour car pile-up on a motorway in west Yorkshire.

The road has been closed, and motorists are told to expect lengthy delays this morning after two incidents on the M62 near Leeds.

Police have shut both carriageways between junction 27 for Gildersome and junction 28 for Tingley, which is causing severe disruption for drivers.

The lorry was travelling east on the M62 when it ploughed through the barrier, hitting the van and a mobile crane on the opposite carriageway.

Police said the lorry driver was badly injured and several others suffered minor injuries in the rush-hour crash.

Fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene and traffic is being diverted on to the M1 north and M621 westbound.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said the incident occurred at around 4.40am. Two lanes of the westbound carriageway had been closed and were expected to remain so for several more hours.

The disruption to traffic has been made worse by another incident involving a man falling from a bridge on to the M62 between junction 30 for Rothwell and junction 31 for Castleford.

The Highways Agency was unclear as to when the motorway would reopen between junction 27 for Gildersome and junction 28 for Tingley.
