Girl Dies After Being Hit By Car
A five-year-old girl died when she was hit by a car outside a west London school. The girl, a pupil at King Fahad Academy, died near the school at the junction of Trinity Way and Bromyard Avenue, in Acton on Monday afternoon. The child, who has not been named, died from her injuries shortly after being taken to St Mary's Hospital. Her next-of-kin have been informed. The driver stopped at the scene and no-one has been arrested, police said. The head teacher of King Fahad Academy said she was still too upset to discuss the incident. She added: "The whole school is in mourning."
Attempted Robbery At Cricket Club
Two would-be robbers fled from a cricket club in south Manchester empty-handed when customers fought them off. At about 12.30am on Monday 8 June 2009, two masked men brandishing a sledgehammer and a baseball bat burst into Burnage Cricket Club on Mauldeth Road, Burnage. They smashed open the doors and tried to threaten everyone inside. The customers challenged them and the robbers fled empty-handed. One customer was struck with the hammer in the struggle, but was not seriously injured. The offender carrying the sledgehammer is described as being 5ft 10ins tall and was wearing a balaclava and dark clothing. His accomplice has been described as being 5ft 10 ins tall, of medium build and was also wearing a balaclava and dark clothing.
Investigation Following Blaze
Police are investigating the cause of a fatal fire that broke out at a flat in the village of Gargunnock, near Stirling. Central Scotland Police said they were working to identify a body found at 22 Charles Street. Fire crews from Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service were called to the first floor flat at about 2.30am. Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area between midnight and 3.00am to contact them.
Air Weapons Stolen In Burglary
Seven air weapons were stolen from a flat in Atherton, Wigan. Between 11.00pm on Saturday 9 May 2009 and 3.30am the following morning, a ground floor flat on James Street was broken into. The window was broken and the offenders stole five air rifles and two air pistols during the burglary. Police Constable John Pilling, based at Atherton Police Station, said: "It is concerning that these potentially deadly weapons have been stolen. If you know the whereabouts of those weapons, if someone offers them to you in suspicious circumstances or you know who is responsible for the burglary, I'd urge you to contact me."

The successfully-run British Isles-wide system of airspace control was this week held up as an example of best practice in dealing with air navigation. Ireland's Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey has called on Europe to look at how the UK and Ireland cooperate in air navigation, after the disruption caused by the volcanic ash plume.

Probe continues into two US soldiers at Guantanamo Bay
The US Defense Department is continuing its investigations into two servicemen associated with the confinement facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Both cases involve personnel assigned to Camp Delta on US Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, where the US is detaining suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban members.

Police investigating the murder of French student Amelie Delagrange have announced a £20,000 reward for information regarding a van, which may be linked to the case. Police have published new photographs of the van – a white Ford Courier, registration P610 XCN – which were taken around May last year in Hillingdon, west London.
