Funfair Ride Collapse Injures Two

Two people have been treated for injuries they sustained after the arm of a funfair ride in Lancashire collapsed and crashed to the ground.

An arm on the Crazy Frog, at the Central Pier, snapped off just before 10.30pm on Wednesday.

The casualties were taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital after the incident.

Lancashire Police Force incident manager Alan Sill said the collapse occurred following a "malfunction" of the ride which was carrying 15 people at the time.

He said: "One of the arms of the ride appears to have collapsed, injuring two people who sustained leg injuries.

"They were both treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for further treatment."

One of the injured - a girl - was found by firefighters trapped in the carriage attached to the arm that had collapsed.

She suffered minor leg injuries, while another woman was hit by a piece of shrapnel from the ride.

Crew manager Mark Warwick, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue, said: "One of the ride's arms collapsed in midair and smashed on to the tracks below."

He added: "We got the call saying the ride had collapsed and persons reported - we feared the worst.

"Fortunately when we arrived it wasn't as bad as first thought and most people had been able to get off the machine.

"One girl was a bit stuck but we led her to safety and she received treatment to her leg."

Both people were released from hospital on Wednesday night.
