| armed robbers threatened staff in a wolverhampton betting shop yesterday, before making off with cash.
the incident happened at the tote bookmakers on lower villiers street, blakenhall at 10.15am on tuesday.
police said two men, wearing balaclavas, walked into the shop and threatened the staff with a revolver-style handgun.
they demanded cash, and cash from the till was handed over. no one was injured during the incident, and no shots were fired.
the first offender is described as 6ft tall, in his 20s, possibly of mixed race or black with a light complexion, and he was wearing a dark sleeved top, dark tracksuit bottoms and gloves.

| a 14-year-old girl has been beaten by a man in west belfast.
the attacker punched the girl to the ground close to dunville park on the falls road.
police said the girl has been walking along the road when she was stopped by the man. he then struck her several times, knocking the teenager to the ground.
the man made off when a passer-by intervened.
he is believed to have headed in the direction of dunville street.
police said the attack happened sometime between 4.30pm and 5.45pm.
the attacker was described as 40 years of age and wearing a tan bomber jacket with similar coloured baseball cap, grey tracksuit bottoms and trainers.
a psni spokeswoman said the teen has been left traumatised by the ordeal.

| road tragedy hits mallow
gardai at mallow are investigating a fatal road traffic collision which occurred this morning, monday, at approximately 6.15am. it happened at ballybeg on the mallow side of buttevant on the main cork to limerick road. the collision occurred when a truck and a 4x4 vehicle collided. a male in his 30s, who was driving the 4x4, was pronounced dead at the scene. a male driver of the truck has been taken to mallow hospital suffering from shock. the road is currently closed to facilitate a forensic collision investigation.

| armed robbers have threatened and robbed an elderly couple in their wolverhampton home.
the couple, who are both in their 80s, answered the door to their flat in woodstock road, east park at around 3.40pm on sunday 4 october.
three men forced their way into the property, armed with a knife and a gun.
the woman was threatened with the knife, while her husband was held down on a chair and the offenders demanded money. a substantial quantity of cash was handed over before the men fled the scene.
police said the couple were uninjured but left shaken by the incident.

gardai are renewing their appeal for stephen o'meara who was last seen on thursday the 6th august this year in wicklow town.

| a public appeal has been launched to assist gardaí in identifying the remains of a man discovered in the river liffey in may.
gardaí are hoping for the public's help in identifying the body discovered at custom house quay on 14th may this year.
a spokesman said a post mortem was carried out by deputy state pathologist dr michael curtis which determined that the body had been in the river for upwards of six months.
as all other avenues of attempting to identify the body had failed gardaí said they are now appealing to the public for information.
so far officers have established that the body was that of a male with an approximate height of between 5' 8'' and 5' 9'' tall with an approximate age of around 45-years-old.

| a man is critical in hospital after being shot by masked men in co wicklow.
gardaí at bray are investigating the shooting, which occurred in the early hours of this morning in richmond hill, bray.
the incident occurred shortly after 1am when shots were fired through the second floor window of an apartment complex from an external stairway. gardaí say there were two male culprits involved.

hayley adamson, 16, was killed when she stepped out into the path of pc john dougal's car in newcastle's denton road on 19 may last year.

| detectives in belfast have appealed for information following an incident during which an 18-year-old man was struck in the face with a broken bottle in the early hours of yesterday morning.
initial enquiries suggest that the man was in a taxi in the area of st george's market at around 12.30am when a group of youths approached the vehicle.

| a teenager found guilty of the murder of 11-year-old schoolboy rhys jones has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
gang member sean mercer, 18, of croxteth was convicted of the murder following a nine-week trial at liverpool crown court.
the court heard he fired three bullets across a pub car park in croxteth after targeting rivals who has strayed on to his "turf".
innocent rhys was shot in the neck on his way home from football practice. he had been caught in the line of fire, and died cradled in his mother melanie’s arms.
