Omagh bomb investigators arrest three men

Three men have been arrested in the Republic of Ireland in connection with the Omagh bombing in 1998.

One man in his 20s and another in his 30s were arrested in Monaghan on Sunday morning and a third man in 30s was arrested in Co Louth on Monday morning.

The three men were taken to Carrickmacross Garda station to be questioned.

A Garda spokesperson said: "As part of the ongoing investigation into the Omagh bombing three men have been arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act."

Under the Offences Against the State Act legislation, the three men who have not been named must be charged or released within 72 hours.

In January, the only person to be convicted in connection with the Omagh bombing was sentenced to 14 years in jail.

Dublin’s Special Criminal Court found Colm Murphy, 49, guilty on charges of conspiracy to cause an explosion.

The Real IRA bomb which killed 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins, and injured hundreds on 15 August 1998 was the single worst atrocity of Northern Ireland’s 30 years of conflict.

Handing down judgement presiding judge, Mr Justice Robert Barr said they were convicting him on the basis of admissions he made in custody and mobile phone evidence.

Murphy lent his phone, and one he borrowed from his foreman, to a man knowing that they would be used for a terrorist purpose - though not specifically for the Omagh attack.
