Concerns Raised Over Cost Of Policing At Woodburn Site

Serious concerns have been raised over the cost of policing on the drilling site at Woodburn near Carrickfergus.

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan said the money would be better spent on community policing after it emerged that it has cost almost £200,000 since February.

'Stop the Drill' campaigners have gathered at the site over concerns the drilling by Infrastrata may affect the drinking water in the area.

Mr McMullun said: "Just last week I questioned the scale of the policing operation at Woodburn with up to six police vehicles at the site at any one time and, at times, even a helicopter, despite the fact the protest has been peaceful and dignified on the whole.

"That is outrageous and there is no doubt that money would have been far better spent on community policing, tackling crime in rural areas."
