Arrests In Dublin Over East Belfast Car Bomb

Two men have been arrested by Irish police in Dublin in connection with a bomb found under a senior PSNI officer's car in east Belfast.

The explosive device was discovered at Shandon Park Golf Club, close to police headquarters, on the morning of Saturday 01 June.

Detectives from An Garda Siochana arrested the individuals, who are both aged in their 40s, in Dublin on Tuesday morning, 20 August. They are being held at a garda station in the city.

The arrests were later welcomed by Detective Superintendent Sean Wright, Head of the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit, who said: "The arrests should send a clear message to those involved in terrorist activity that the border does not provide an escape route.

"Our two police services work collaboratively on a daily basis, sharing knowledge and information, to ensure that there is no hiding place for criminals or terrorists.

"My detectives continue to investigate this reckless attack on a public servant and we have considerable support from our AGS colleagues."

The New IRA claimed responsibility for the failed attack via a statement issued to the Irish News in June.
