Viable Explosive Device Found at Newry Sinn Féin Office
The PSNI has confirmed that an object found at a Sinn Féin office on Monaghan Street in Newry was a viable explosive device.
The security alert, which had closed the area, ended today, Monday, 6 October, after Army Technical Officers (ATO) made the device safe and removed it for further examination.
Police received a report of a suspicious object in the area shortly before midnight on Sunday, 5 October. Following the ATO's assessment, the cordons were removed and Monaghan Street was re-opened.
Sinn Féin immediately condemned the incident, with MLA Liz Hughes calling the placement of the viable device at the office "an attack on democracy". Inspector Walker, leading the investigation, expressed gratitude to local people for their patience while the area was made safe.
Detectives at Ardmore are now investigating and have asked anyone with information, or who may have captured dash-cam or CCTV footage, to contact them on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1648 05/10/25.
A report can be submitted online using the non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/ or you can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org/.
