Police Launch Criminal Investigation Into Threats Against Elected Officials

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has launched a criminal investigation into threats made to elected representatives in the Newry, Mourne and Down Policing District.

The threats were made by masked and armed men in a video circulating on social media, where politicians were described as 'legitimate targets'.

District Commander Superintendent Lynne Corbett said it is "completely unacceptable that anyone should face such threats and intimidation," and confirmed police will continue to engage closely with local elected representatives to ensure they feel supported and safe. Alliance Deputy Leader Eóin Tennyson MLA also condemned the threats as "vile and reprehensible," stating that the threats are not just an attack on politicians but on the democratic process itself, and vowed that Alliance will not be deterred from serving the people who elected them.

The book, The Story of Charles Thomson and the Declaration of Independence by Philip Johnston, aims to bring the story of the Maghera-born figure to a young audience ahead of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration in July 2026. Thomson, from Upperlands, Co. Londonderry, migrated to the colonies in 1739 and rose to prominence as a founding father.

Along with John Dunlap from Strabane, he was one of only two names on the original Dunlap broadside (the Declaration of Independence).

Minister Lyons stated the project is exactly the type of initiative he had envisaged to promote Northern Ireland's shared history with the United States.

Bluetongue Virus Suspected In Co Down, Temporary Control Zone Introduced

DAERA vets are investigating the suspicion of Bluetongue virus (BTV) at a holding near Bangor, Co Down, after active surveillance indicated the presence of the disease in two cows.

A 20km Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) has been introduced, prohibiting the movement of susceptible animals (cattle, sheep, goats, deer, and llamas/alpacas) on or off premises, though moves direct to slaughter are permitted.

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir urged all producers to follow the restrictions to limit the potential for further spread. The virus is primarily transmitted through biting midges and does not affect people or food safety. The Chief Veterinary Officer urged keepers to remain vigilant and report any symptoms immediately to their vet or the DAERA helpline on 0300 200 7840.
