Every Smoke-Free Day Counts - South Eastern Trust

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust is urging people who smoke to quit, emphasising that health improvements begin within minutes of a final cigarette and continue to build over the long term.

In the first hours and weeks after stopping, heart rate and blood pressure start to return to normal within 20 minutes. By 24 hours, nicotine has been cleared from the body. Between two and 12 weeks, circulation improves and lung function increases, making day-to-day activities feel easier.

Benefits continue to grow over the months and years. Within one to nine months, many former smokers report less coughing and breathlessness and a boost in energy. After one year, the risk of heart disease is around half that of someone who carries on smoking. After five years, the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat and bladder is cut by about half. By 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is roughly half that of a smoker, and after 15 years, heart disease risk becomes similar to that of a non-smoker.

South Eastern Trust, Smoking Cessation Specialist, Claire Black, said: "Many people think the damage from smoking has already been done, but the truth is that the body starts to recover almost immediately after a person stops smoking. Every smoke-free day is a positive step towards better health.

"Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions anyone can make for themselves and their family. Not only does it improve physical health and reduce the risk of serious illnesses, it can also boost energy levels, improve quality of life and save money.

"Support is available every step of the way. People are much more likely to quit successfully when they access specialist support and we would encourage anyone attending any of the hospitals within the South Eastern Trust to ask their healthcare professional to make a referral. Other sources of support can also be found at www.stopsmokingni.info"

The Trust's Smoking Cessation Service provides free support, advice and guidance to help people stop smoking and stay smoke-free.

Anyone considering quitting can speak to their healthcare professional for help, or visit www.stopsmokingni.info for additional resources and support.
