Heron Energy Back At Ulster University To Inspire Future Engineers
Heron Energy returned to Ulster University's L'Derry (Magee) campus to engage engineering students, deepening collaboration between industry and academia and helping to build Northern Ireland's future energy workforce.
Company representatives Colleen Bradley (Project Manager), Ciaran McCartan (Project Engineer) and Cian O'Connor (Placement Engineer) delivered presentations and took part in a Q&A with undergraduates from the Renewable Energy Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering programmes, sharing practical insights from their careers.
The session highlighted Heron Energy's work across wind and solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and behind-the-meter solutions, featuring case studies spanning on-site and utility-scale battery storage projects.
Bradley, a graduate of Ulster University's Renewable Energy Engineering programme, and O'Connor, who is currently on placement with the company, offered first-hand perspectives on the transition from higher education to industry.
Heron Energy is offering a one-year placement, with the potential for successful placement students to secure permanent roles on completion of their studies. Colin Power, Head of Development at Heron Energy, said: "The energy transition depends on skilled, motivated engineers, and it was a pleasure for some of Heron Energy's staff to share their experience with the next generation of renewable energy talent at Ulster University. From wind and solar to battery storage, our work is about powering communities responsibly while creating long-term value for people and places. With former students and placement engineers already contributing to our team, this visit also reflects the strong pathway that exists between the programme and the renewable energy industry in Northern Ireland and beyond."
Prof. Jim Harkin, Head of the School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems, Ulster University, said:"Building strong links between our students and industry is central to providing an outstanding student experience and preparing our graduates for successful careers. We are delighted to welcome Heron Energy back to the school and to provide our Renewable Energy Engineering students with the opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals. The placement opportunities and potential career pathways offered by Heron Energy are particularly valuable, giving our students the chance to apply their learning in a real-world environment and develop the skills needed to contribute to Northern Ireland's transition to a sustainable energy future."
Students interested in the placement scheme should send a CV and cover letter to careers@heronbros.com. Further information about the company is available at heronenergy.co.uk.
