Third man charged denies musician's murder

A third man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Londonderry musician James Gilchrist.

The body of Mr Gilchrist, 62, was found in the River Foyle just hours after he left a pub in the city on September 28.

Darryl John Quigley, 18, from Crawford Square, appeared in court on Thursday to deny the charge.

A detective sergeant told the court that when charged, the defendant replied: "I never murdered James Gilchrist. I had nothing to do with his murder."

An 18-year-old and a 27-year-old have already appeared in court charged with the murder.

Mr Gilchrist is known to have left the Oval Bar at Duke Street in Londonderry at around 12:30am on September 28. He made his way across the top deck of the Craigavon Bridge and was last seen at the bottom of John Street approximately 10 minutes later, when he crossed the road onto the Foyle Embankment.

At the time he was last seen the victim was riding his Black Raleigh racing bicycle, which is fitted with drop down handlebars, a silver parcel carrier rack and a dynamo.

His body was later recovered from the River Foyle around 5:20pm the same day.
