Belfast praised for recycling facilities

Belfast's recycling facilities have today been hailed as being among the best in Europe, according to the EUROCITIES Environment Forum who recently had representatives in Belfast.

The organisation is a powerful European lobbying group, which represents more than 120 cities across the continent.

The visitors were able to view the efforts Belfast has made towards achieving the recycling standards set by Europe, and were especially impressed with the three state-of-the-art recycling centres opened by the City Council in 2004.

Following their visit to Belfast, representatives of the Forum have described the city as "very inspiring" and believe it could entice other European cities to follow our lead.

Councillor Peter O’Reilly, Chairman of the Council’s Health and Environmental Services Committee said: “These centres herald the next generation of civic amenity, with the emphasis clearly having moved from general waste collection to segregation of resources for reuse and recycling.

“Belfast City Council has taken the challenge of improving our recycling rates extremely seriously, and has embarked on a wide range of successful initiatives. These new centres are at the vanguard of that drive, and have helped us push our recycling rate up to 17 per cent, putting us well on target to meet the pending EU targets."

He also added that the recognition received from Europe would not have been possible with out the co-operation of the people of Belfast and he wished to thank everyone for their good work.

Belfast City Council currently operates three dedicated recycling centres, at Palmerston Road, Alexandra Park Avenue and Blackstaff Way, and is hoping that a fourth centre, to replace the Park Road civic amenity site, will be up and running later this year.
