Jewellery stolen in Abbey Centre raid

Detectives in Newtownabbey are appealing for information following a burglary at a jewellery store in Abbey Centre last night.

Shortly after 11.30pm a red Ford Escort carrying four males crashed into the foyer of the shopping centre before driving through the main doors.

The car proceeded to drive up the mall, before stopping at Ernest Jones jewellers. Three of the men got out of the car and smashed two display windows with sledge hammers, while the driver turned the car.

All four men were wearing hooded tops and balaclavas.

It is understood at least £20,000 of jewellery was stolen, and the car was later found abandoned in the Bawnmore Grove area of Newtownabbey.

Police have appealed to any witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious in the area to contact them on: 0845 600 8000 or alternatively on the confidential Crimestoppers line on: 0800 555 111.
