Two Stabbed In Markets Clash

The latest incident in a long-running local dispute led to two men being stabbed in early morning disturbances in the Markets area of Belfast.

While one of them has today undergone surgery, the other man is said to be recovering in hospital. Both of those injured were stabbed in the stomach.

Police officers who were called to the scene said that a crowd of about 30 people had gathered when they rushed to the scene at 1am on Friday morning.

They said that an initial altercation over a previous dispute quickly escalated with the two stabbed and another two men suffering head injuries.

They were also taken to hospital, but the extent of their injuries is not known.

Meanwhile, Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them and detectives investigating the trouble have since carried out searches at the scene.

The Markets area, a staunch Republican district, is also where Robert McCartney was murdered - allegedly by IRA members - in February 2005.

Mr McCartney, 33, was stabbed to death following a row in a bar on the edge of the district. His family has blamed the IRA for the murder and subsequent interference with evidence and witnesses.
