Other NI News In Brief

Orange Order

Order was the name of the day at the weekend as a parade that has previously been one of the most contentious parades of the marching season has passed off without incident. Although there was a large police presence at the 'Tour of the North' parade, a deal between residents and organisers meant the parade's return leg did not pass the Ardoyne shops flashpoint.

Derry Scare

Several houses in the Glen area of Londonderry had to be evacuated due to a bomb alert on Friday afternoon. Army bomb disposal experts were called to examine a suspicious object outside a house on Glenvale Road at 3pm which was later declared a deliberate hoax after a number of controlled explosions were carried out.

Car Taken

Meanwhile, police in Londonderry are also said to be probing an incident of so-called "creeper burglary" in the early hours of Saturday. A blue Nissan 4x4 vehicle was taken from the driveway of the owner's house in the Mount Vernon area of the city. It is believed that a woman who lived at the house had lost her handbag containing her car keys earlier in the day.

Bookies Hit

A knife was held to his throat of a customer during a robbery on Saturday evening at a bookmakers in north Belfast. The incident happened at about 6pm at the premises in North Queen Street when a man wearing a black balaclava and black hooded top entered the shop and threatened the customer. He demanded money from the cashier and then escaped with cash in the direction of Henry Street.
