Jammed wheel airliner makes emergency landing
A passenger jet with faulty front wheels was forced to make an emergency landing with 146 people on board.
As the plane touched down, a sheet of flame and smoke shot from the wheel assembly that was stuck with the wheels facing sideways.
US television news channels broadcast the drama as it unfolded live, and it was apparently watched by some of the passengers on the seat-back screens on board the aircraft.
The Airbus A320, operated by JetBlu, left Bob Hope Airport in Burbank bound for JFK International Airport when the pilot noticed that there was a malfunction in the plane's landing gear.
Initially redirected to nearby Long Beach Airport, Flight 292 was subsequently cleared to land at Los Angeles International Airport where full emergency service cover was standing by to deal with the situation.
However, the aircraft had to fly in a holding pattern for over three hours to burn off fuel to lighten the plane and reduce the load on the faulty nose wheels for the landing attempt.
Fire and other emergency services rushed to the jet once it had ground to a halt on the runway. A few minutes later, passengers were allowed to disembark via a stairway.
Despite the spectacular landing the jet appeared to be otherwise undamaged. There were no reports of any injuries.

The pilot of the Piper 34, which was flying to the airport from Blackpool, reported technical problems on final approach. An aircraft has reportedly been forced to make an emergency landing at Edinburgh airport. Thirty-six people were onboard the Flybe Bombardier Q400 plane, which was travelling from Manchester, when the crew were reportedly forced to shut down one of the aircraft's turboprop engines.

Birmingham airport closed by emergency landing
Two crew onboard a stricken A TNT Boeing 737-300 have escaped injury after a problem with the aircraft's undercarriage forced the lane to make an emergency landing. However, the aircraft crash-landed, tipping over onto one wing, blocking the runway at Birmingham International Airport.

A plane, with 149 passengers on board, made an emergency landing at Cork Airport at 11.45pm on Tuesday night. The Boeing 737-300 series flight was travelling from Belfast to Spain, however the pilot reported a suspected fuel leak and the flight was diverted to Cork. The aircraft landed safely and none of the passengers or staff were injured.

Gatwick Airport's runway has been temporarily closed to all flights following an emergency landing by a Flybe jet. A Cardiff-bound Dash 8 aircraft had to put down at Gatwick Airport in West Sussex, from Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. All 46 passengers on board the flight were safely evacuated at the airport at around 11.
