Fiancé jailed for Valentine murder
The fiancé of Joanne Nelson, who was reported missing on Valentine’s Day, has been jailed for life for her murder at Hull Crown Court.
Paul Dyson had initially admitted to the manslaughter of Miss Nelson, but pleaded guilty to murder at the beginning of his trial on Monday.
Judge Tom Cracknell told the 31-year-old wood machinist that he must serve at least 16 years in jail before he can be considered for parole.
It is believed that Dyson strangled Joanne, a 22-year-old Jobcentre worker, in a row over household chores at their home in Hull on February 13.
Dyson then reported Joanne as missing the following day – Valentine’s Day. He also made a televised appeal for information about his fiancée.
Joanne’s body was eventually discovered in woodland near Malton, North Yorkshire on March 24, following a massive search by Humberside Police.
At sentencing, Judge Cracknell condemned Dyson for his television appeal, saying that it displayed a “breathtaking and nauseating hypocrisy”.
Outside the court, Miss Nelson’s family and friends read a statement, which said: “He has taken away the most precious gift any parent can have and that’s a child. So many lives have been destroyed by her death.
“We, her parents, her sisters and all those who loved her have been cheated. Justice can never be done, because Joanne can not come home.”

Police in Leeds have renewed their appeal for help in tracing a 42-year-old woman and her nine-year-old son. Joanne Binns, from Swarcliffe, was last seen at about 15:15 on Monday, 14 September, when she got a taxi to the Hyde Park area of Leeds. She is described as white, 5ft 3ins tall, with short brown hair.

Body find confirmed as Joanne Nelson
A post-mortem examination has confirmed that the body discovered by police yesterday is that of missing Hull woman, Joanne Nelson. The post-mortem established the cause of death was strangulation. Miss Nelson, 22, a Jobcentre worker, was reported missing on Valentine's Day by her fiance, Paul Dyson.
