Man in court over blast deaths

A man has appeared in court charged with murder and arson, following an explosion at a house in Staffordshire which killed four people.

Mark Goldstraw (31) from Leek was remanded in custody after being charged with four counts of murder and one charge of arson.

A man and three children died in the fire at the house in Cheddleton last Thursday. The bodies of Roderick Hine, 44, and his partner's three children - Samantha Carter, 16, her sister Patricia, 10, and her brother Marcus, 10 - were found in the house. They had all died of carbon monoxide poisoning from the smoke fumes.

The children's mother, Angela Carter, was working at the time of the blast.

No application for bail was made and Mr Goldstraw is due to reappear in court on March 20.
