Barton Denies Assault Of Former Team-Mate

Premiership footballer Joey Barton has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a former team-mate in a row at his previous club's training ground.

The 24-year-old Newcastle United midfielder is accused of attacking Ousame Dabo on May 1 at his former club, Manchester City's training ground in Carrington, in the south of the city.

Mr Barton, who was born in Liverpool, appeared before Trafford Magistrates' Court to face one charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in jail.

At the hearing, prosecutor David Alcock described the incident as a "vicious attack".

Mr Barton, who has "strenuously denied" the attack, was released on unconditional bail to reappear at the same court on October 4.

He was suspended by Manchester City following the incident and then sold to Newcastle United in a £5.8 million deal.

However, he is now out of action after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his left foot during a pre-season friendly in July.
