Pensioner in wheelchair robbed in home
A 77-year-old woman in a wheelchair has been robbed by two men at her home in County Down.
The woman was in her house at Main Street, Moira, at about 3.30pm on Thursday November 8 when a man came in through the unlocked back door. She tried to escape but the man disabled her electric wheelchair by disconnecting the power supply.
He then took cash from her purse while an accomplice searched and ransacked her home.
One of the robbers is said to have been slim, aged about 30, and 6ft tall, with a swarthy complexion and an English accent.
SDLP assembly member for Lagan Valley Patricia Lewsley has condemned the robbery. She said: “This woman was robbed in her home in Moira by a number of men who gained entrance under false pretences. This is an appalling attack. I would appeal to the Department of Social Development to carry out an audit of all elderly and vulnerable persons across NI and ensure they have monitors and other safety devices installed. There is also a need for a multi-agency approach to this problem. Community and voluntary groups must come together to work with Government and community police to tackle this problem.”
The police in Lisburn are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Main Street/St John's Park area of Moira at the time of the robbery to contact them. (AMcE)
