A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of four counts of attempted murder following a violent incident in the Altcar Park area of L'Derry in the early hours of Tuesday, 7th April.

Police responded to reports of an ongoing incident at approximately 2:40 am. Upon arrival, officers observed a man armed with an axe deliberately driving a vehicle into a residential property. Superintendent Claire Hamilton stated that officers initially deployed incapacitant spray on two occasions in an attempt to stop the suspect. However, the man produced a knife and continued to ram the building with his vehicle. The property and a nearby car sustained extensive damage during the attack.

Four occupants were inside the house at the time of the ordeal. While left badly shaken, they were brought to safety by responding officers and remained otherwise uninjured.

Following prolonged negotiations and to mitigate further risk, police discharged an attenuating energy projectile (AEP), which struck the man in the leg. The suspect was subsequently arrested just before 4:00 am and remains in police custody.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, the man is being questioned in relation to several other offences connected to the incident.
